At approximately 10:20 a.m. local time, an unidentified 35-year-old man was fatally injured after being pulled into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 while it was being pushed back on the taxiway. The individual was neither a passenger on the flight nor an employee of the airport, and the circumstances surrounding his presence on the tarmac are still under investigation by Italian authorities.
As a result of the incident:
- All flight operations were suspended for nearly two hours
- 19 flights were canceled, and several others were diverted to nearby airports, including Milan Malpensa, Bologna, and Verona
- No injuries were reported among the aircraft’s crew or scheduled passengers
- The aircraft sustained no damage and the engine involved is a CFMI CFM56-5B5/P
Airport operator SACBO released a statement acknowledging the event and confirming that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause and circumstances of the fatality.
