An ATR 42-512 aircraft operated by Indonesia Air crashed into a mountain while approaching Makassar-Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in South Sulawesi on Saturday, 17 January 2026. The aircraft was conducting an aerial patrol mission for the Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance agency. It departed from Yogyakarta-Adisutjipto Airport and was flying to Makassar. On board were seven crew members and three passengers. All ten occupants were killed in the accident. According to Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, air traffic control cleared the aircraft for an approach to Runway 21 at Makassar at around 11:23 local time. During the approach, controllers noticed that the aircraft was not following the correct flight path and issued several instructions to correct its position.
