An ATR 42-512 aircraft operated by Indonesia Air crashed into a mountain while approaching Makassar-Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in South Sulawesi on Saturday, 17 January 2026.
The aircraft was conducting an aerial patrol mission for the Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance agency. It departed from Yogyakarta-Adisutjipto Airport and was flying to Makassar. On board were seven crew members and three passengers. All ten occupants were killed in the accident.
According to Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, air traffic control cleared the aircraft for an approach to Runway 21 at Makassar at around 11:23 local time. During the approach, controllers noticed that the aircraft was not following the correct flight path and issued several instructions to correct its position.
Shortly after the final instruction, contact with the aircraft was lost.
The aircraft crashed into a cliff on Mount Bulusaraung in Maros Regency. Wreckage was found at an altitude of about 4,327 feet, around 14 nautical miles northeast of the runway threshold. The minimum safe altitude in this mountainous area is significantly higher.
Weather reports at the time showed good visibility, light to moderate winds, and nearby rain showers with cumulonimbus clouds in the approach area.
Search and rescue teams from Basarnas located the wreckage in a steep ravine. The aircraft was destroyed on impact. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and an investigation is ongoing.
